There’s a Change in the Air

There’s a change in the air. The seasons they are a’changin’, James Whitcomb Riley would have written. Indeed, the trees are glamorous in their shimmery golden gowns. The sunshine is peeking up these mornings deeper to the south. The very atmosphere has taken on a crispness unknown to sultry summery days. Riley wrote,

They’s something kindo’ harty-like about the atmusfere                                                                                         When the heat of summer’s over and the coolin’ fall is here
Of course we miss the flowers, and the blossums on the trees
And the mumble of the hummin’-birds and buzzin’ of the bees
But the air’s so appetizin’; and the landscape through the haze
Of a crisp and sunny morning of the airly autumn days
Is a pictur’ that no painter has the colorin’ to mock
When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder’s in the shock.”

The changing seasons are an exciting time for most of us. We eat differently in the colder months than the warmer ones. We dress differently. We switch from baseball and kayaking to basketball and ice skating. Our campfires come in to the fire place. Our mountains cover up with thick white comforters of snow. We nestle and snuggle and cradle mugs of cocoa.

Some folk advise those unhappy with the current Colorado weather, “Stick around. If you don’t like this weather, just wait awhile. It’ll change.” Riley put it this way, “It is no use to grumble and complain; It’s just as cheap and easy to rejoice; When God sorts out the weather and sends rain – Why, rain’s my choice.”

You could almost feel sorry for those people who dwell in a warm, constant-temperature climate. No change in the air. No surprise skiffs of snow. No fat sweaters or wooly blankets. No variations in the weather.
