July 4th is just around the corner. Our Independence Day. America’s birthday. Are you ready? Are the Popsicles frozen? The corn shucked and tucked away for that special day? The pie ingredients purchased and the hot dogs and hamburgers waiting in the freezer? The friends invited and the decorations ready to be hung and strewn? Unfortunately, fireworks aren’t able to be purchased this year in those areas where they normally are, but that’s okay. We want to keep our land of the free and home of the brave safe and unmarred by more fires.
As we enter this time of holiday get-togethers and barbecues and potlucks, let’s take time to reflect on the reason for our celebrations. Drink in the spacious skies, breathe in the amber waves of grain. Gaze upon the purple mountain majesties, taste of the fruited plain. Never forget God’s shed grace on our land, or the plea for an attitude of brotherhood.*
Pay respects to the broad stripes and bright stars, and to those both living and gone who have stood in defense of them. Take a moment – or more – to praise the Power that made and preserved us a nation, and let “In God we trust” be the motto of our day and our life.**
Let freedom ring in this land of Pilgrim’s pride, the land where our father’s died – the land of the noble free. Allow her past to sink deep into your soul, and her future to fill full your heart with hope. Sing sweet of this Land of Liberty, let music swell the breeze and ring from all the trees.***
Yes, let’s take time to reflect. The reason for our celebration is worthy of consideration. We are blessed here in America, and Dusty Shutt Silver wants to wish you all a safe and happy Independence Day. May God bless you all, and may God bless our beloved land. Happy birthday, America!
